Which LG models handle an IPTV LG TV setup without a stick

LG calls its software webOS, and the version decides whether the store still has the players. Sets from 2018 run webOS 4.0, 2019 sets 4.5, 2020 sets 5.0, 2021 sets 6.0, and everything since is named by year: webOS 22, 23, 24 and 25. All of them install IPTV Smarters, Smart IPTV or IBO Player from the store and decode a Full HD feed without help. To check yours, go to Settings → All Settings → Support → About This TV.

A 2016 or 2017 LG on webOS 3.0 or 3.5 still turns on, but the store no longer lists the players and the browser cannot play a stream. For those sets the honest IPTV LG TV answer is a Fire TV Stick 4K in HDMI 1, commonly CA$60 to CA$70, which turns the old panel into a current device.

Among current sets the difference is the processor and the panel, not the software. The entry UR and UT ranges draw the guide slowly but play everything; the C-series OLED has LG’s fastest processor and a 120 Hz panel that flatters a hockey feed.

The IPTV LG TV install path, menu by menu

Everything for an IPTV LG TV setup lives in the LG Content Store, which webOS 22 and newer simply call Apps. Nothing needs a developer mode, a computer or a USB stick.

  1. Open the store. Press Home on the Magic Remote. On webOS 22 and newer, point at the Apps tile in the home bar; on webOS 4.0 to 6.0, pick the LG Content Store icon in the launcher ribbon. Sign in to a free LG account if asked.
  2. Search for the player. Click the magnifying glass and type with the pointer, or hold the microphone button and say the name. Three players work well on webOS: IPTV Smarters, Smart IPTV and IBO Player. Smart IPTV and IBO Player charge a small one-time activation fee after a trial period; IPTV Smarters does not. Check the store on your model; listings differ by webOS version.
  3. Install and open it. Click Install, then Launch. The app appears in the home bar; hold the wheel on it and choose Move to drag it to the first position.
  4. Sign in. In IPTV Smarters choose Login with Xtream Codes API and enter the server address, username and password from your email. In Smart IPTV or IBO Player the screen shows the TV’s MAC address; add your M3U link against that MAC on the app’s website from a phone, then reload.
  5. Set your time zone. In the player settings set the time zone to your own, Eastern, Central, Mountain or Pacific, not the server’s, or every listing on the guide is off by hours. Check a live game against the clock.

The whole IPTV LG TV install is three minutes on a set that is already on your Wi-Fi. If the store shows nothing when you search, the TV is on webOS 3.5 or older, or General → System → Location is not set to Canada; fix the region and search again.

Two ways to log in

Xtream Codes or M3U: the IPTV LG TV login

Your IPTV LG TV login arrives in two formats and both work on webOS. Xtream Codes is three fields, a server address, a username and a password, and it is the one to use in IPTV Smarters because the app can then ask the server for the guide, the seven-day catch-up and the categories separately. The guide loads faster and stays in sync.

An M3U playlist is a single long link that contains every channel, and it is what Smart IPTV and IBO Player expect, loaded against the TV’s MAC address rather than typed on the remote. It works, but a twenty-thousand-channel M3U takes an entry-level UR set a full minute to parse on every launch. We send both and recommend Xtream Codes on any LG.

The same details work on every screen in the house. Standard plays two streams at once and Pro five; the IPTV LG TV login does not change, only how many can play.

Settings that matter

The six webOS settings that make IPTV LG TV streams hold at 7 pm

A new LG is tuned for the Best Buy floor: a Vivid picture, motion smoothing on, and a timer that turns the set off after four hours. None of that suits an IPTV LG TV stream of a live regional feed. Make these six changes once in Settings → All Settings.

Picture mode: Filmmaker or Cinema

Picture → Select Mode → Filmmaker Mode (or Cinema on sets before 2020). Vivid and Standard push colour and sharpening on a compressed live feed until skin tones go orange and the boards shimmer. Filmmaker shows the feed as the broadcaster sent it.

TruMotion off for sports

Picture → Advanced Settings → Clarity → TruMotion → Off. Interpolation guesses frames between the ones the feed contains, and on a hockey feed the guesses trail the puck. On a 60 Hz set, Cinema Clear is the most it should ever be.

Energy Saving off

Picture → Energy Saving → Off (on OLEDs, Support → OLED Care → Energy Saving). The default step dims the panel on dark scenes, which is most of a night game. It is the IPTV LG TV setting people mistake for a bad feed.

Auto Off to Off

General → System → Timers → Auto Off → Off (older sets: General → Timers). With no remote presses for four hours the TV shuts down, usually in the third period of a game that went long.

Quick Start+ on

General → Devices → Additional Settings → Quick Start+ → On. The set wakes in a couple of seconds and keeps its network connection warm, so the player opens straight to the guide instead of re-authenticating. It adds a little standby power draw.

HDMI Deep Colour if you use a stick

General → Devices → HDMI Settings → HDMI Deep Colour → 4K for the port the stick is on (older sets: General → HDMI Ultra HD Deep Colour). Without it a 4K stick falls back to 8-bit and dark arena crowds turn to blocks. Not needed for built-in apps.

Wired beats wireless

The Ethernet port on the back: the IPTV LG TV buffering fix that works

Every LG sold in Canada in the last decade has an Ethernet port on the back next to the HDMI inputs. LG Canada lists it as a 100 Mbps port on most models, four times what a 4K stream needs at roughly 25 Mbps per screen. Plug a cable in, go to General → Network → Wired Connection (Ethernet), and the set prefers it to Wi-Fi from then on.

If a cable to the TV is not possible, the next best IPTV LG TV option is a powerline adapter pair, commonly CA$50 to CA$80, which carries the connection over the electrical wiring to an outlet behind the TV. A circuit shared with a fridge is noisy, so test two outlets. If the only wiring in your building is coax, use powerline or accept Wi-Fi.

Failing both, go to General → Network → Wi-Fi Connection and pick the 5 GHz name; if your router shows only one, give the 5 GHz band its own name so the TV cannot fall back to 2.4 GHz. Our buffering guide covers the router side for Rogers, Bell and Telus.

An OLED is the best panel in Canada for a night game, and an IPTV LG TV setup on a C-series shows the 4K feeds, where the broadcaster provides them, better than any stick can. In practice that means Sportsnet and TSN during marquee games and a share of the on-demand library. CBC, CTV, Global, Citytv and the French networks are Full HD, and with Filmmaker Mode on, every set on this page shows them at full quality.

The 2026-27 season changed what Saturday means. Rogers and the CBC did not renew, so Saturday games are Saturday Night Hockey on Sportsnet rather than over the air, selected Mondays are Sportsnet+ streaming only, and selected Wednesdays are on Amazon Prime Video. The regional feeds work as they always have: Leafs split between Sportsnet Ontario and TSN4, Canadiens on TSN2 and RDS, Senators on TSN5, Jets on TSN3, Flames and Oilers on Sportsnet West, Canucks on Sportsnet Pacific. One IPTV LG TV quirk on hockey nights: Multi View on webOS 23 and later shows two sources side by side, but only one can be an app, so Sportsnet next to TSN needs a stick in HDMI for the second. Yes, on any LG from 2018 onwards. The player installs from the LG Content Store like Netflix does, and the built-in decoder handles Full HD and 4K. A stick is only necessary on webOS 3.5 and older, or for TiviMate, which does not exist on webOS.

Why does my IPTV LG TV setup switch itself off during a game?

The Auto Off timer. webOS assumes nobody is watching after four hours without a remote press, and a game that goes to overtime is that long. Settings → All Settings → General → System → Timers → Auto Off → Off. Set Energy Saving to Off while you are there.

Should TruMotion be on or off for hockey?

Off. TruMotion invents frames between the ones in the feed, and on a fast puck the invented frames trail and smear. If a 60 Hz UR set looks juddery, Cinema Clear is the most it should run.

Does the LG have an Ethernet port, and should I use it?

Yes, and yes. It is the fix for the 7 pm buffering that apartment Wi-Fi causes. Plug in, choose General → Network → Wired Connection, and the set uses the cable from then on.

Can I use the same IPTV LG TV login on the TV and my phone?

Yes. One IPTV LG TV login works on every device. Standard plays two streams at once and Pro plays five, so the LG in the living room and an iPhone on the GO train count as two.

Is there a free trial I can run on the LG before paying?

Why is there picture but no sound on a few channels?

Those feeds carry Dolby AC-3 audio and the web-based players on webOS cannot always decode it. Pick the stereo or French feed of the same channel, which usually carries AAC, or play it through a stick. It is a codec limit of the app, not the network.
