IPTV Rogers guide: Ignite plans, the XB8 gateway and the one setting that matters
Rogers is the largest internet provider in Ontario and Atlantic Canada, and since 2023 it is Shaw in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba too. Every IPTV Rogers question we get comes down to three things: is the plan enough (yes), what the Ignite gateway is doing to the Wi-Fi (a lot), and whether Rogers interferes with the stream (no).

Which Ignite tier is enough for IPTV Rogers use, and where the plan is cable versus fibre
Rogers sells Ignite Internet in four common tiers: Ignite 150, Ignite 500, Ignite 1 Gig and Ignite 1.5 Gig, with faster tiers in the fibre footprint. A stable Full HD stream needs about 15 Mbps per screen and 4K about 25 Mbps per screen, so a Pro plan running five 4K screens needs about 125 Mbps. Every IPTV Rogers household is covered by the cheapest tier on the list, and upgrading the plan does not fix buffering.
What does differ is the wire. In most of Ontario, New Brunswick and Newfoundland, and across the West, Ignite runs on the coaxial cable network: fast down, slower up, and shared with the neighbourhood at the node. Where Rogers has built fibre to the home, mostly newer subdivisions and parts of Atlantic Canada, the same tier names run on a symmetrical fibre line that does not share a node. Your bill does not say which you have; a fibre install has a small optical terminal on the wall feeding the gateway by Ethernet rather than a coax screw.
For IPTV Rogers use on cable, the evening matters. A 500 plan can test at 500 at noon and at a lower figure at 8 pm when the node is busy, and that is normal for shared cable. It is still far above what five screens need, which is why the buffering you see at 8 pm is almost always the Wi-Fi in the house rather than the node.

Setting up the Ignite gateway for IPTV Rogers streaming, setting by setting
The Ignite gateway is a combined modem and router, the XB7 on most installs and the XB8 on newer ones, and it is managed through the Ignite WiFi Hub app or the admin page at 10.0.0.1. These are the settings that change how an IPTV Rogers stream behaves, in the order to do them.
- Split the Wi-Fi bands. Out of the box the gateway broadcasts one network name and steers each device between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. In the Ignite WiFi Hub app open the network settings and give the 5 GHz band its own name, which turns band steering off; on the admin page at 10.0.0.1 the same thing is under Gateway → Connection → Wi-Fi. Join the TV device to the 5 GHz name only. This is the one IPTV Rogers setting that fixes more tickets than every other on the page combined.
- Check Advanced Security. The gateway’s Advanced Security filters traffic it considers risky, and it occasionally flags a streaming server. If a channel refuses to open on every device but plays on mobile data, open the Ignite WiFi Hub app, find Advanced Security under the network settings and turn it off, then test again. Leave it off if the stream comes back.
- Use the Ethernet ports. The XB7 and XB8 have four Ethernet ports on the back, one of them 2.5 Gbps. If the TV is in the same room as the gateway, a cable ends the IPTV Rogers Wi-Fi conversation entirely. If it is not, a powerline pair, commonly CA$50 to CA$80, from the gateway’s outlet to the TV’s outlet does the same job in most Canadian houses.
- Leave IPv6 on. Ignite hands every device an IPv6 address alongside IPv4, and the player apps handle both. Turning IPv6 off speeds nothing up and can slow the guide. Leave the DNS on the gateway’s default as well; a custom DNS is not where an IPTV Rogers problem lives.
- Bridge mode only if you own a router. Bridge mode turns the gateway into a plain modem and hands the connection to your own router. It is worth doing if you already have a Wi-Fi 6 mesh system you trust. It is not worth doing to fix buffering on its own, and it disables the gateway’s Wi-Fi and the pods. - Add a pod only where the TV is far away. Ignite WiFi Pods are Rogers’s mesh. A pod in the TV room, with the TV device joined to it on 5 GHz or plugged into the pod’s Ethernet port, is the right IPTV Rogers answer for a two-storey house with the gateway in the basement.
If a step above does not match your app, the gateway is an older XB6, which has the same settings under slightly different names. Rogers’s own internet support pages describe each gateway’s admin page, and none of the IPTV Rogers settings above needs a call to Rogers.
Why band steering is the IPTV Rogers setting that matters most
The Ignite gateway’s Wi-Fi is decent and its band steering is not. It moves a device to 2.4 GHz the moment 5 GHz looks marginal, and it is slow to move it back. A Fire TV Stick behind a TV, two rooms from the gateway, will spend most of a hockey game on 2.4 GHz, sharing three channels with every router on the street, and that is the IPTV Rogers buffering pattern we see most.
Splitting the bands removes the choice from the gateway. A device joined to the 5 GHz name stays on 5 GHz or drops off entirely, and if it drops off you have learned something useful: that room needs a cable, a powerline pair or a pod, not a bigger plan. Do this first on any IPTV Rogers setup, before touching the buffer size in the player, because a wired or 5 GHz stick with a default buffer plays cleanly and a 2.4 GHz stick with a perfect buffer does not.
The same logic applies to the former Shaw gateways in the West. Some households still have a Shaw BlueCurve gateway, which is the same Comcast hardware under an older name; the BlueCurve app has the same option to name the bands separately, and IPTV Rogers customers in Calgary or Vancouver should do exactly the same thing.
Wired versus Wi-Fi in a typical IPTV Rogers install
A typical Ignite cable install puts the gateway wherever the coax enters the house, which is usually a basement wall, a utility closet or the corner of a living room. That is why the IPTV Rogers experience differs so much between the main TV, which is often in the same room as the gateway, and the bedroom TV, which is two floors and three walls away.
The fix by room: same room as the gateway, run a cable to one of the four Ethernet ports. Adjacent room, 5 GHz on its own name is usually fine. Different floor, use a powerline pair or an Ignite WiFi Pod, and plug the TV device into the pod’s Ethernet port where the pod has one. Where the only wiring in the building is coax, as in many Toronto and Calgary condos, MoCA adapters carry Ethernet over the coax already in each room. They cost more than powerline, commonly CA$120 to CA$180 a pair, and need a MoCA filter at the point of entry. It is the answer for a condo where powerline is noisy and 5 GHz is crowded.
Ignite TV and an IPTV player on the same gateway
Ignite TV is delivered over IP through the same gateway, which makes it the same kind of traffic as an IPTV Rogers player on your stick. The Ignite TV box has its own reserved path on the gateway, so watching Sportsnet on the Ignite box and a regional feed on the stick at the same time works, and neither takes priority over the other in a way you can change.
Where the two collide is Wi-Fi. An Ignite TV box on Wi-Fi in the same room as a stick on Wi-Fi is two 4K streams fighting for the same 5 GHz channel. IPTV Rogers throttling and blocking: what some users report
Rogers does not block IPTV, and neither does any Canadian ISP. Federal Court site-blocking orders exist, but they name specific pirate domains, and a legitimate subscription is not on any of them. Every IPTV Rogers login we issue works the same on Ignite as it does on Bell, Telus or a third-party ISP such as TekSavvy that resells the Rogers cable network.
Throttling is a different claim. Some users report that Ignite cable slows in the evening in a way that shows up on live streams first. We have never seen evidence that Rogers targets IPTV traffic, and evening slowdown on shared cable is a property of the technology, not a policy. Is Ignite 150 enough for IPTV?
Yes. It carries five 4K screens at about 25 Mbps each with room to spare. The plan is never the limit on Ignite; the gateway’s Wi-Fi and the distance to the TV are.
Does IPTV Rogers work on the former Shaw network in the West?
Yes. Rogers took over Shaw in 2023 and the Fibre+ cable network in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba is now sold as Rogers. The BlueCurve gateway is the same Comcast hardware as the Ignite gateway, and the settings on this page apply with slightly different menu names.
Is bridge mode worth it for an IPTV Rogers setup?
Only if you already own a router you prefer. Bridge mode does not fix buffering by itself and it switches off the gateway’s Wi-Fi and pods. Splitting the bands and wiring the TV does more, at no cost, in ten minutes.
Why does a channel refuse to open on Rogers but play on my phone’s data?
That pattern usually means Advanced Security on the Ignite gateway has flagged the streaming server. Turn it off in the Ignite WiFi Hub app and test again. It is a false positive, not a block, and it does not happen on the mobile network because the gateway is not in the path.
Does Rogers throttle IPTV in the evening?
We have never seen evidence of it. Some users report slower evening speeds on Ignite cable, which is what a shared node does at 8 pm, and a wired TV on a 150 plan still has many times what a stream needs. If a wired TV buffers only in the evening, test at noon and at 8 pm and give Rogers both numbers.
Which device works best for IPTV Rogers households?
Whatever you can wire. An Apple TV 4K with Ethernet, a Fire TV Stick with the CA$20 adapter, or a Samsung or LG set on its own Ethernet port all play cleanly on Ignite. On Wi-Fi, a Fire TV Stick 4K Max on the separate 5 GHz name is the best value.
Can I test an IPTV Rogers setup before paying?
Yes. The 24-hour trial is the full service on any device and needs only an email. Run it at 8 pm on the TV that matters, first on Wi-Fi and then on a cable, and you will know before you spend anything.
