How IPTV works, from the broadcaster to your living room, without the jargon
IPTV is television carried over an internet connection instead of a coaxial cable or a satellite dish. That definition covers Bell Fibe TV as much as it covers us. Understanding how IPTV works means five links in a chain, two login formats and one number, the megabits each screen needs, and this page takes them in that order.

How IPTV works in five links, from the feed to the screen
Every stream you watch has travelled the same route, and each link is a place where something can go wrong. Knowing how IPTV works at each one turns “it is buffering” into “the basement Wi-Fi is the problem”, which is a thing you can fix.
- The broadcaster’s feed. A channel such as TSN4 or Sportsnet Ontario exists as a live video feed. Whether a service is entitled to carry it is a licensing question under the Copyright Act, covered at the bottom of this page; how IPTV works is identical either way.
- The encoder. The feed is compressed into a stream a home connection can carry, usually H.264 or H.265. Full HD lands at roughly 8 to 12 Mbps and 4K at roughly 20 Mbps, which is where the per-screen speeds below come from.
- The streaming servers. The encoded stream sits on servers that hand it out to each subscriber who asks. Pro plans use the priority servers we reserve for peak hours, which is why the tier matters on a Saturday at 7 pm ET.
- Your ISP. Rogers, Bell, Telus, Vidéotron, Cogeco, Eastlink, SaskTel or a third-party provider carries the stream like any other internet traffic. Canadian ISPs do not block IPTV services; Federal Court site-blocking orders name specific pirate domains.
- Your router and your device. The last few metres, from the gateway to the TV, are where most problems live. A wired Fire TV Stick behaves differently from one on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi two walls away, and the player app decodes the stream and draws the guide.
Nothing in this chain is downloaded and stored. A live channel is decoded as it arrives, which is why how IPTV works differs from Netflix: a film can buffer a minute ahead, a live feed can only buffer a few seconds, and that is why the connection quality at 7 pm matters more than the advertised speed of the plan.
Xtream Codes or M3U: how IPTV works at the login screen
Your login email carries two things that open the same channels. Xtream Codes is three fields: a server address, a username and a password. The app uses them to ask the server separately for the channel list, the guide, the catch-up window and the on-demand library, so each loads only when needed and stays in sync. IPTV Smarters Pro, TiviMate and XCIPTV all offer it, and it is the format we recommend wherever the app allows.
An M3U playlist is a single long link that contains every channel in one file. It works in any player, including built-in players on older smart TVs and VLC on a laptop. The cost is that the whole list downloads and parses on every launch, a full minute on an 8 GB stick with 20,000 channels, and the guide comes from a separate EPG link that can drift out of step. That is how IPTV works in the M3U format on every service, not a quirk of ours.
Neither format changes what you can watch or how many screens can play; the plan decides that. The same login goes on the Fire TV Stick and the iPhone, and the server counts streams, not devices.
What the player app does, and why the app decides how IPTV works for you
The stream is the same on every device; the app is what you live with. It draws the guide, remembers your favourites, plays catch-up and decides how much to buffer, so how IPTV works day to day is mostly how the app works. That is why our app guides are as long as the device guides.
The guide (EPG)
The programme guide lists what is on each channel for the next several days. The app downloads it once a day and lines it up against your clock, which is why the time zone setting matters: on the server’s zone, a 7 pm ET puck drop shows at the wrong hour.
Catch-up
Seven days of catch-up on the channels that support it. The app marks those channels and lets you open yesterday’s game from the guide, played from the server rather than recorded at home; how IPTV works for catch-up is closer to on-demand than to a PVR.
Categories and groups
The server sends channels grouped by country and type, Canada, Sports, News, Kids, and the app lets you hide groups you never open and build a favourites row of the twenty channels you actually watch.
The buffer
Each app keeps a few seconds of video ahead of the picture. A larger buffer rides out a weak Wi-Fi moment; too large on a low-memory stick and the app restarts. TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro expose the setting.
The decoder
Hardware decoding uses the device’s chip and is the default; software decoding is the fallback for a single channel that shows blocky green frames because of a broadcaster encoding quirk.
Multi-screen
The app does not enforce the stream count; the server does. Two screens on Standard, five on Pro, across any mix of devices; a “too many connections” message means the limit worked.
How IPTV works on your connection: Mbps per screen, and why wired beats Wi-Fi
The number is per screen, not per household. A stable Full HD stream wants about 15 Mbps and 4K about 25 Mbps, with headroom for the guide and whatever the other bedroom is doing. Two Full HD screens on Standard therefore want roughly 30 Mbps of real throughput at the TV, and a Pro household running four screens wants 60 or more, which most Canadian plans above the entry tier supply.
The catch in how IPTV works is that “real throughput at the TV” is not the number on your bill. A 500 Mbps fibre plan can deliver 12 Mbps to a Fire TV Stick on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi in a condo at 8 pm, because thirty routers share the same air and a live stream cannot wait out congestion the way a download can.
Wired fixes that. An Ethernet cable, an Ethernet adapter on a stick, or a powerline pair to the outlet behind the TV gives the device its own path to the router, and the 7 pm buffering stops. Where wiring is impossible, put the device on 5 GHz with its own network name so it cannot fall back to 2.4 GHz. The buffering guide goes through this per router.

How IPTV works at Bell and Rogers, and what is different here
Bell Fibe TV is IPTV. So is Rogers Ignite TV. Both deliver channels over the same internet connection your laptop uses, decode them in a box or an app, and draw a guide from a server. How IPTV works at Bell is how IPTV works here; the plumbing is the same, and three things differ.
The first is licensing. Bell and Rogers hold carriage agreements with each broadcaster and pay for them, and those costs are part of why a package with the regional sports channels commonly lands between CA$95 and CA$130 a month after the promotional year. The second is the bill: bundled to their internet, with a receiver rental per room and a term. Ours is CA$22 to CA$29 a month, tax in, on any ISP, with no renewal.

Where the law sits in how IPTV works in Canada
IPTV is a delivery technology, and a delivery technology is neither legal nor illegal; the same is true of a coaxial cable. Nothing about how IPTV works decides the question. What the law looks at is the stream itself, and in Canada that is governed by the Copyright Act, which decides who may communicate a broadcast to the public and under what licence.

How IPTV works: the questions we are asked most
Is how IPTV works the same as streaming?
Close. Netflix and Crave are on-demand streaming, where a file can buffer a minute ahead. IPTV adds live channels, which arrive in real time and buffer only a few seconds, plus a guide and catch-up. Same internet; different timing.
Do I need a special box for how IPTV works to apply to me?
No. A Fire TV Stick, an Android TV set, an Apple TV, a Samsung or LG smart TV, an iPhone, a Windows or Mac computer and the MAG and Formuler boxes all run a player app. If you own one of those, you own the box.
How fast does my internet need to be?
About 15 Mbps per screen for Full HD and 25 Mbps for 4K, measured at the device rather than at the router. A 50 Mbps plan runs two Full HD screens if the main TV is wired; a household on Pro with four screens at once is better on 100 Mbps or more.
Why does it buffer on Wi-Fi and not on a cable?
Because of how IPTV works: a live stream cannot wait. Wi-Fi in an apartment building at 7 pm shares its channel with every neighbour, and each short dropout becomes a pause on screen. A cable, an Ethernet adapter or powerline gives the device its own path to the router. On Wi-Fi, use 5 GHz with its own network name.
Is how IPTV works different on Rogers, Bell or Telus?
No. The stream is ordinary internet traffic on all of them and no Canadian ISP blocks IPTV services. What differs is each ISP’s gateway, its Wi-Fi bands, bridge mode and DNS, which is why there are separate guides for the Rogers, Bell and Telus routers.
Do I need a VPN?
Not in Canada. Nothing in how IPTV works needs one; a VPN usually makes the guide show the wrong time zone and adds a hop that can cause buffering. The VPN guide covers the cases where people still want one.
