Which Android TV or Google TV device to buy for IPTV Android TV use

The Chromecast with Google TV HD is the cheap one, commonly around CA$40: Full HD, 1.5 GB of memory, and a USB-C port that is only for power. The Chromecast with Google TV 4K (commonly CA$80 to CA$90) adds 4K HDR and 2 GB of memory. Google replaced it in 2024 with the Google TV Streamer (~CA$130), a box with an Ethernet port and 4 GB of memory.

The Nvidia Shield TV (~CA$200) and Shield TV Pro (~CA$260) are what we point people to when they want the guide to open instantly. Both have Gigabit Ethernet and the longest update history of any box here; the Pro adds USB for recording. One Shield in the main room and Chromecasts elsewhere is the usual IPTV Android TV pattern.

Sony Bravia sets have run Google TV since 2021 and Android TV from 2015 to 2020; TCL and Hisense sell Google TV sets in Canada, but also Roku and VIDAA sets, so check the home screen. The onn Google TV box from Walmart (~CA$30 to CA$40) is the cheapest IPTV Android TV screen for an old TV: 2 GB of memory, 4K output, no Ethernet port.

The install

The IPTV Android TV install path, menu by menu

Every player we recommend for an IPTV Android TV setup is in the Google Play Store, so there is no Downloader, no unknown sources and no APK file. What goes wrong is an out-of-date device or store, so the first step is an update.

  1. Update the device and the store. On Google TV go to Settings → System → About → System update; on older Android TV (a 2015 to 2020 Sony) it is Settings → Device Preferences → About → System update. Then update the Play Store app itself under Settings → Apps; a stale store is the usual reason an app “is not available on this device”.
  2. Open the Play Store. On Google TV the store is not a home-screen tile: go to the Apps tab and choose Search for apps, or press the Assistant button and say the app’s name. On Android TV the Play Store icon is in the Apps row.
  3. Install the player. Search for TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro and press Install. If Smarters does not appear in the store on your model, take TiviMate; it is the better app here anyway.
  4. Sign in. Open the player and choose Xtream Codes login (Smarters calls it Login with Xtream Codes API). Type the server address, username and password from your trial email, or paste the M3U link if the app only accepts a playlist.
  5. Check the clock. Go to Settings → System → Date & time and confirm automatic time and your own time zone. Then check a live game in the guide against a clock; if it is hours out, set the player’s EPG time offset to zero.

The whole IPTV Android TV install is three minutes on a device already signed in to a Google account. A 2015 to 2017 Sony on Android TV 8 or 9 still works, but the settings below matter more on it.

Two ways to log in

Xtream Codes or M3U: the IPTV Android TV login

Your login arrives in two formats and both work on every device here. Xtream Codes is three fields, a server address, a username and a password. TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro use it to ask the server for categories, the guide and the seven-day catch-up window separately, which is why the channel list appears in seconds on a Chromecast.

An M3U playlist is one long link that contains every channel. It works in any player. On a Chromecast HD with 1.5 GB of memory, a twenty-thousand-channel M3U can take a full minute to load on every launch. We send both, and for an IPTV Android TV player the Xtream login is the one to use.

Settings that matter

A new Google TV device is tuned for YouTube and Netflix, which buffer a long way ahead. A live regional feed cannot, so a setting invisible on Netflix shows up as a stutter at puck drop. These six cover most IPTV Android TV tickets we see.

Hardware decoder

TiviMate: Settings → Playback → Decoder → Hardware. Smarters: Settings → Player Settings → Decoder → Hardware. The software decoder on a Chromecast drops frames on a 60 fps sports feed; use it on one channel only if that channel shows green blocks.

Match content frame rate

Google TV: Settings → Display & Sound → Match content frame rate; on a Shield it is under Device Preferences. Canadian feeds are 60 fps and need nothing; UK and European feeds are 50 fps and judder on a 60 Hz output until this is on.

Buffer size

TiviMate: Settings → Playback → Buffer size; Medium on a Chromecast or onn box, Large on a Shield or Streamer. Too large on a 1.5 GB device and the app restarts itself in the third period.

Dynamic range on auto

Under Display & Sound → Advanced leave HDR on the automatic or match-content option rather than forcing it on. Forced HDR makes an SDR feed from CBC or CTV look grey and flat; it is the most common “colours are wrong” ticket on Chromecasts.

Ethernet where the device has it

A Shield, a Streamer and most Sony, TCL and Hisense sets have a port on the back. Plug it in, then turn Wi-Fi off under Settings → Network & Internet so the device cannot fall back to it.

Close background apps on 2 GB sets

On a TCL, Hisense or onn box, go to Settings → Apps → See all apps, force-stop what you are not using, then turn off Accounts & Sign In → your account → Autoplay video previews; the trailers use memory the stream needs.

Ethernet on Android TV: the IPTV Android TV buffering fix that works

The Shield and the Google TV Streamer have Ethernet built in, and most Sony, TCL and Hisense sets have a 100 Mbps port on the back, enough for four 4K streams at ~25 Mbps each. A wired IPTV Android TV device does not care that the neighbour’s router is on the same channel at 7 pm.

A Chromecast has one USB-C port and it is used for power, so a wired IPTV Android TV Chromecast needs Google’s power adapter with an Ethernet port (~CA$30) or a USB-C hub that passes power through. The onn box has no wired option. If a cable to the TV is impossible, a powerline adapter pair (commonly CA$50 to CA$80) carries the connection over the electrical wiring to an outlet behind the TV; a circuit shared with a fridge is noisy.

What looks best on an IPTV Android TV device, and the 2026-27 hockey picture

An IPTV Android TV box with 4K output plays the 4K feeds where the broadcaster provides them, which in Canada mostly means Sportsnet and TSN during marquee games and part of the on-demand library. The regional feeds, CBC, CTV, Global, Citytv, TVA, Noovo and ICI Radio-Canada are Full HD on every device here; the Shield’s upscaling makes a 720p feed look cleaner on a 65-inch panel.

The 2026-27 season changed what Saturday means. Rogers and the CBC did not renew, so Saturday games are Saturday Night Hockey on Sportsnet rather than over the air, selected Mondays are on Sportsnet+ only, and selected Wednesdays are on Amazon Prime Video, also in the Play Store. The regional feeds are unchanged: Leafs split between Sportsnet Ontario and TSN4, Canadiens on TSN2 and RDS, Senators on TSN5, Jets on TSN3, Flames and Oilers on Sportsnet West, Canucks on Sportsnet Pacific. Check the home screen first: TCL and Hisense also sell Roku and VIDAA sets in Canada, and neither has general IPTV players. If it really is Google TV, update the set and the store; failing that, a CA$40 Chromecast on an HDMI port is quicker.

Is my Sony Bravia Android TV or Google TV?

Sets from 2021 onwards run Google TV; 2015 to 2020 sets run Android TV. Both work; older sets load the guide slowly, so use Xtream.

Is there a free trial I can run on the device first?
